Natural Beauty

Dunedin offers a remarkable variety of landscapes and outdoor experiences, which encourage active lifestyles and a deep connection to the natural environment.

Just an hour away from Dunedin, the Otago Peninsula is famous for its wildlife, including the world’s only mainland royal albatross breeding colony, yellow-eyed penguins, and fur seals.Supporting the protection and rehabilitation of these species is the Wildlife Hospital Dunedin—New Zealand’s first dedicated wildlife hospital—reflecting the region’s genuine commitment to conservation.

On the other side of the harbour, the Orokonui Ecosanctuary provides a chance to explore New Zealand’s unique and endangered flora and fauna.

The challenging Organ Pipes Track, easy Pineapple Track on Flagstaff or scenic route to Signal Hill all provide sweeping views of the city and its harbour. There are many sandy beaches to visit, and a recently completed cycle and walkway along both sides of the harbour (with a ferry service connecting the two ends).

Dunedin is also the gateway to the wider Otago region, such as the Catlins, Central Otago and the Mackenzie Country – all only a few hours’ drive away, offering easy access to a wealth of natural, cultural and adventure destinations.
